34-year old Wendy Barraclough from Mickleover, Derby used to weigh 18st 9lb and wear a dress size 28. Today, after shedding 7st 12lb, she weighs just 10st 11lb, wears a dress size 12 and has been awarded the Second Place Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness magazine Slimmer of the Year 2005.
Wendy scooped the runner’s up award – and a cheque for £1,000 - in the coveted Slimmer of the Year Awards at a ceremony held at the Roof Gardens, Kensington on Tuesday 4th January, which was presented to her by Rosemary Conley.
Wendy’s weight-loss transformation has been unbelievable, even to her. She says: “I still sometimes pass a mirror and have to do a double-take to check that the slim, confident woman looking back really is me.
“I got used to feeling like a big, fat, useless lump but everything has changed for me now. I feel fabulous inside and out.”
Adds Rosemary Conley CBE: “Wendy has achieved an astonishing weight loss and looks wonderful after being overweight for over a decade. I am delighted to present her with the Second place Slimmer of the Year 2005 Award.”
Wendy began to put on weight when, at the age of 21, a severe bout of glandular fever left her inactive for about two years. She swapped a life of aerobics, roller-skating and swimming for one of constant comfort snacking. “I would think nothing of eating a whole box of chocolates in a binge,” says Wendy. Over the next few years, the lifestyle Wendy was starting to lead contributed heavily to her ballooning weight: “I couldn’t be bothered to cook and would live on takeaways,” she says.
Wendy’s knees were once so painful, she was unable to walk down the street. Also, the chronic back pain she suffered made gardening on her two allotments difficult. Now, after losing 7st 12lb with the help of her local Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness Club in Mickleover, Derby run by Susan Booth, the pains have gone and Wendy is running between three and 10 miles a week and tending her allotment in her bikini!
And, with a job as a community play worker, Wendy is involved in organising the children’s sports and athletics events but now, instead of just supervising, she can actually join in.
