The dieter’s Easter survival guide
Easter is a time of temptation but also a time of opportunity.
Here are my top 10 tips to help you survive Easter and get on track to slim down and tone up ready for summer!
- Easter eggs
The problem with Easter Eggs is they are made of chocolate! Not only that, they are big and well, untidy, once you have broken into one you end up ‘tidying’ it up by levelling it and before you know it, you have eaten it all! In my honest opinion, I think Easter eggs are dangerous. They liven up your taste buds for chocolate and by the time Easter is all over, you are addicted again. I suggest you ask you family to give you an alternative gift – flowers, rose bush for the garden, clothes, make-up – anything but chocolate!
- Hot cross buns
I love hot cross buns and I am a huge fan of the low-fat ones made by M&S. I eat them without anything spread on them and always warm them through to make them super delicious. At around 200 calories, but low in fat, they can easily be worked into your calorie allowance to give you a sweet treat without ruining your dieting efforts. If you don’t have the calories spare, just go for a 40-minute walk before or after your bun to burn off 200 calories!
- Easter cakes
Getting into the habit of eating cake is a dangerous path to tread. We all love cakes. We can all find a corner to fill at 3 o’clock in the afternoon and squeeze in the small portion of something gorgeously delicious – but what do you have to do to burn off those calories? Is it really worth it for a few seconds on the lips? I don’t think so. Try to resist and you will be so thankful when it comes to weighing in day!
- Spring is in the air
Spring is the perfect time to enjoy our beautiful countryside. When the trees suddenly come into leaf, the blossom bursts into colour and the wildlife sing with excitement – there is no better time to step out in the fresh air and burn lots of calories. It is good for the soul, the mind and the body! Do it as often as you can. Remember, every mile you walk burns around 100 calories and it takes just 20 minutes.
- Wear your pedometer
There is no better motivating tool than a pedometer to encourage you to move more. Just remember this, the more you move, the more you burn. If you want to lose weight, think about the direct correlation between calories ‘in’, (food) and calories ‘out’, (exercise and activity). Losing weight is simply a matter of physics: eat fewer calories than your body spends and you HAVE to lose weight. Move about more and your body HAS to burn more calories. Combine eating less with doing more, and you will lose weight TWICE AS FAST!
- Get your head right
Think about why you want to lose weight. Write down the top five reasons that you believe losing weight and getting fitter is going to change you. I guarantee that you will enjoy more self confidence, you will be able to wear more fashionable clothes, you will feel less tired, feel fitter, reduce your blood pressure/cholesterol levels and you will have more energy.
- Cook yourself some good meals
I have deliberately used the word ‘good’ because I want that word to incorporate ‘healthy’, filling and nutritious food. Diet food really doesn’t have to be boring. - Make a plan
If you are going away on holiday this summer, make a plan to get slim and fit for the beach. Join one of our classes or online to make sure you achieve your goal. Losing weight will make you feel so much better. Don’t delay any longer. Summer will be here before you know it and you will wish that you had started on your journey earlier!
- Spring clean your fridge
Be quite bold and throw out any foods that you know you might eat in a weak moment. Check out the ‘best before’ dates too and chuck anything that is out of date. It is really therapeutic to clear out ‘stuff’.
- Spring clean your wardrobe
As you approach the warmer weather, clear out those clothes that you don’t like and look at some of those lovely things you haven’t been able to wear for a while because of your weight. Soon you will be wearing them again and it will feel like you have a whole new wardrobe! It will inspire you into action. Just do it!
