The New Year is the perfect time to start a diet and set some goals to improve your fitness. And it’s much easier to make those decisions if you’re feeling lethargic and, well, just plain fat and fed up after overindulging over the last few weeks. Don’t worry. Everyone is feeling the same!

I know it sounds too good to be true but it really does work. This is how.

Be a lean machine

When we significantly overeat – such as on holiday or over Christmas – the food is processed in our digestive system and then stored. It doesn’t turn into fat immediately, but waits in the “holding bay” until the body decides whether to use the food as fuel for energy or – if it’s surplus to requirements at that time – to store it as fat. To put it another way, imagine your body is a factory which uses a certain amount of fuel each day to keep the machines running and everything working smoothly and efficiently. But suddenly, over several days, it receives a much larger delivery of materials than normal, much more than is needed. It’s difficult to store all this stock because there just isn’t space and the only solution is to pile it up high. To do that, though, requires very heavy metal containers that can be stored on top of each other.

Now let’s return to your body and the increased deliveries of food and drink you have taken in over the last couple of weeks. The only way your body can store all that food temporarily is to convert it to a substance called glycogen, which is stored in the muscles, and the only way that glycogen can be stored is in several-times-its-own-weight in water, resulting in a significant weight gain on the scales. The good news is that the sooner you reduce your calorie intake significantly, the quicker your body will start using up some of that stored glycogen and, at the same time, the excess fluid will pass away and your weight will drop very quickly. That’s why I can say you could lose 7lb in 7 days on my diet.

Combine this strict diet – which offers alternate days of 1,200 calories and 1,000 calories for just one week – with some increased physical activity, and you can shift all your festive flab. But you do need to be saintly for that week! Exercising will significantly increase your calorie spend to maximise your weight loss and at the end of it you will feel fantastic.

But perhaps the most important benefit of losing those excess lbs is that it will provide a huge motivation for you to continue on your weight-loss journey. Seeing real results so quickly and feeling SO much better in yourself will be all that you need to stay focused.

It’s really important too, that you prepare yourself for your new and healthier lifestyle in 2013. Here are my top ten tips to guide you forward to achieve real success and turn your life around.

  1. Make a plan for your meals each week.
  2. Always make a list before you go food shopping.
  3. Never buy treats “in case visitors call”. You will end up eating them!
  4. Plan your exercise or activities each week.
  5. Join a class to slim down and get fit with others like you. Click here to find your local class.
  6. If you can’t get to a class, consider joining our online club.
  7. Make some active resolutions with the family, eg walk instead of drive to school on three days a week if that’s practical.
  8. Start some new activities with the family – playing sport or learning a new pastime.
  9. Stop snacking between meals – except for a couple of healthy Power Snacks each day.
  10. Try to have some alcohol-free days each week.
