40 things I’ve learned in the last 40 years

It’s my 40th anniversary of being in the weight loss industry and over the years I’ve learnt a thing or two. Here I share my 40 findings to help you in your weight loss journey

“Regular exercise can help you lose weight twice as fast”

  1. Eating fat makes you fat
  2. In the order of the body using calories, alcohol burns first, then carbohydrates and protein and lastly, fat
  3. Walking on your bottom doesn’t work the muscles in your bum but walking upstairs does
  4. Olive oil is 100% fat
  5. Dark coloured salad leaves contain loads more nutrients than pale ones
  6. Aerobic exercise burns fat from your body
  7. Toning exercise makes your muscles stronger which increases your metabolic rate
  8. We should all eat our 5-a-day
  9. We burn around 100 calories every time we walk or jog a mile. If we jog it just doesn’t take as long
  10. Cottage cheese tastes fabulous in sandwiches with Marmite
  11. Dry roasted sweet potatoes taste loads better than ordinary ones
  12. We should do 10,000 steps a day
  13. It takes approximately 2,000 steps to walk a mile
  14. Putting a vegetable stock cube in boiling water when you cook vegetables, rice or pasta makes it taste loads better
  15. Low Gi foods make you feel fuller for longer
  16. Snacking between meals is a big reason why people gain weight
  17. Portion size is the main reason slimmers don’t lose weight when they’re dieting
  18. Regular exercise can cause you to lose weight twice as fast
  19. Exercise helps your skin to shrink as you slim
  20. Fat is burned in your muscles when you exercise
  21. When you get older, exercise helps to stop our joints from aching
  22. Stretching after exercise helps prevent muscle soreness later
  23. Drinking water during exercise helps you workout for longer
  24. When doing a toning exercise with bands or light weights, do a set of repetitions until it aches a little, then do four more
  25. Type 2 Diabetes can be prevented with a good diet, by exercising regularly and keeping your weight at a healthy level
  26. Jumping up and down or doing high impact exercises strengthens your bones
  27. Using a resistance band is as effective as using weights
  28. Oily fish is really good for our hearts
  29. A little alcohol is good for us
  30. Oats and blueberries are superfoods
  31. Avocados are high in fat
  32. Losing a lot of weight early in your dieting campaign motivates you to keep going
  33. You can lose inches and not lose weight
  34. Tea is hydrating, not dehydrating
  35. Exercise releases happy hormones called endorphins which can counter depression
  36. Wearing a pedometer is very motivational when trying to be more active
  37. Cooking without fat in a non-stick pan is really easy
  38. Losing weight is a matter of physics – if you eat fewer calories than your body burns, you are bound to lose weight
  39. Your metabolic rate falls with age
  40. Nothing tastes as good as being slim feels!
