Until the age of 18 Claire weighed 9st 7lb but, by the end of her first year at college, she had put on almost 3 stone and increased her dress size from a 12 to a size 16. And, by the time she entered her twenties, Claire put on a further stone to become the heaviest she had ever been.
Tucking into chocolate bars, or satisfying her sweet tooth with cake, biscuits or bowls of sugary cereal, Claire settled for believing that she was the size she was meant to be. “I’ve even bought chocolate Easter eggs for other people and ended up eating them myself!” says Claire.
And it wasn’t just chocolate which was having a detrimental effect on Claire’s figure. “Most of the food I was eating was fried, in creamy sauces, or covered in cheese. I loved pizza and lasagne and often had a full hot meal for both lunch and dinner, as well as the odd cooked breakfast,” adds Claire.
But Claire wasn’t happy with her figure and she struggled to find clothes she felt she looked good in. “I’d go shopping for clothes but come back with new make-up. With lipsticks and mascara it doesn’t matter what size you are.”
When her dress sized reached a size 18, Claire joined her local Rosemary Conley Diet & Fitness Club along with her mum and, at first, was nervous about the exercise. “The only exercise I’d done in years was walking upstairs to bed,” says Claire.
“It helped having mum in the same class as I had no excuse not to go back,” adds Claire, who soon got more confident in doing the exercises and started going to two or more classes a week.
Claire lost her first stone within 7 weeks of joining the class and within a further four months, she had lost her second stone. Her third stone vanished within the next four months and now, weighing 4st 3lb less than when she joined the Rosemary Conley Club, Claire now weighs less and is a dress size smaller than she was when she first started college at the age of 18.
“I’ve found that, from being a couch potato, I actually love exercise now,” says Claire.
